Power of the Mind: Very Unusual Events
Power of the Mind: Very Unusual EventsbyDr. P.C. SimonIn 1980, I was teaching a series of classes on Mind Potential atUnity Church, Vancouver. I thought it would be a good idea to have aplace for retreat and meditation for the group. I was told that oneMr. Beaulieu had a piece of land for sale. It was near Maple Ridge onone of the side-roads of Dewdney Trunk Road. I went to meet the man.I only had his name and not his address. We went to Haney and fromthere took the Dewdney Trunk Road leading to Maple Ridge. When we hadgone about four miles along the Dewdney Trunk Road, I told Lize, mywife, to turn right at the next road whenever she came to it. Withina few minutes she saw a road and turned right. We drove about a mileand saw, on the left, a man standing in front of a house. Shestopped the car and we asked the man if he knew where Mr. Beaulieulived. He replied that he was Mr. Beaulieu and wanted to know ourmission. When I told him, he took me around to show the place. Thesurprising thing is that we were led to the right place at the righttime. There were so many side roads along Dewdney Trunk, yet wehappened to turn along the right road and stop at the right placewhen the man had just come. Is this coincidence or mind power?Yet another instance was when I was invited to talk at Unity Church,Vancouver on Sunday, January 1, 1984. My topic was "Psyche and theEnigmatic Aura." I needed a Tesla coil to demonstrate the aura ofindividuals. Dave Linquist was the storekeeper at the PhysicsLaboratory at the University of British Columbia. I wanted to borrowa Tesla coil from him that day. It was Friday and I needed it forSunday. So, I phoned at 11 A.M. to see if he was there. He was notthere and his secretary had no idea where he had gone or when hewould return. I had to go to the Registrar's Office which was closeto Dave's office. After finishing my work at the Registrar's Officeat just past 12 noon, I went to see if Dave had returned. By strangecoincidence, instead of going for lunch as usual, he came back to hisoffice and I was able to get the coil.Such things also happen to people who do not consciously use mindpower but I find that these incidents happen to me quite often, farbeyond the bounds of coincidence. Carl Jung has coined theterm "synchro-nicity" for such serendipitous coinci-dences.Bernie Siegel, a surgeon at Yale New Haven Hospital and teacher atYale University, wrote in "Love, Medicine, and Miracles", "I believethat there are very few accidents. Coincidence is God's way ofremaining anonymous . . . just happen to be in the right place at theright time. Even elevator doors start to open when you arrive."Siegel wrote that we create our own opportunities from the same rawmaterials out of which other people create their defeats. The following may be a case of divine intervention. I say, "maybe", because God is so perfect and everything is set so preciselythat no intervention is necessary.During 1940, my brother George was in charge of the electricalinstallation of the airport in Coimbatore, India. The Second WorldWar made the construction of the airport urgent. Close to the railwaystation at Coimbatore, lived Dr. Evans, an English missionary and agood friend of my brother. During that year, Dr. Evans was invited tobe an external examiner at the Madras Christian College and he hadaccepted the invitation. On the day he was to proceed to Madras, he told his servant to packhis suitcase and bedding and to prepare an early dinner. He had hisdinner early and was packed ready. He sat in his living room readinga book. The first train for this overnight journey would leaveCoimbatore at 7:00 p.m. When it was time to board the train, theservant reminded him that it was time to go to the station. Evansreplied, "Yes, but I will wait a little." The train came and wentand Evans sat there and read the book. The second train would leavefor Madras at 10:00 p.m. The servant came and reminded him again thatit was time to go to the station. Again Evans told him that he wouldwait and let that train go. The last express train would leaveCoimbatore at 11:00 p.m. At 10:30 the boy came and reminded Evansthat it was time to go to the station. Evans told him, "Yes, thankyou. Now you better go to bed. I will be going some time later."The boy was puzzled because there is no other train. The 11:00 p.m.train came and went. But Evans continued to sit and read. The boycame and asked him if he had decided not to go, and whether he shouldprepare his bed. Evans' reply was that he will be going but did notexplain how or when. (In truth, he did not have any money to buy theticket). At 11:30, a car drove up and a couple walked in. They weresurprised to see Evans for they thought that he had left for Madras. They told him that they were passing by, saw the lights, and came into investigate. They saw that he was packed and ready to go. Evanshad no answer as to when and how he was leaving. He had to be inMadras the next day. They bid goodbye and left. After another fifteen minutes, the same couple drove back. They toldEvans that they went about two miles but could not go any furtherbecause their conscience was troubling them. They knew that he hadto be in Madras. The only possibility was to go by car, a ten hours'journey. Gasoline was rationed. They begged him to take their car, gave him coupons for 16 gallons of gasoline to reach Madras, and themoney to purchase the gasoline. They requested him to drive them totheir bungalow and take the car and go. Though he protested that hedid not want to inconvenience them, they insisted. So, finally, after midnight they loaded his baggage into the car. He dropped themat their bungalow and left for Madras.____________________________________________________________________________Resource Box: Copyright 2003. Dr. P.C. The best way to be
The best way to beThe best way to be is untouched: Caring about the well-being of others, butnot making oneĘs well-being depend on theirs. However, this state ofexisting, although sought-after by many because of its guarantee for apeaceful, undisturbed life, is not very easy to achieve. In fact it seems analmost impossible state to reach for a caring parent, for as long as one haschildren, and one cares for them, one is practically incapable of beingcontent if the children are not doing well in the ways that matter most:health, happiness, and survival.Yet, whether enlightenment can only be achieved by being untouched or not, astate of near-enlightenment is not impossible, even when one is "touched" byoffspring. The secret to reaching the near-enlightened state may simply beto keep oneĘs priorities in order. That is, not attaching oneself toanything that can be taken away again: not a position, not a possession, noteven oneĘs own life. And yes, that too is a hard state to achieve, but notimpossible, especially when one learns to see things in perspective. It is all about perspectives, you know. Perspectives are eminent.Perspectives may be considered the biggest business of all. Look around you:there are so many people and institutions that are making staggeringfortunes by being in the business of selling perspectives. Some preach theperspective of guilt to place a burden on followersĘ souls in order to makethem submissive. Some lecture the perspective of punishment to impose fearon followers in order to have them refrain from doing certain things. Somepromote the perspective of a forthcoming yet distant paradise as a reward tomotivate followers in doing the things they want them to do.And some preach the perspective of developing oneĘs own perspective: Turninginside to obtain insight. They do that by informing others that they are notfollowers, but entities who should develop their own perceptions; and thatthey should not feel forced to do anything that is not in harmony with theirspirit; that they should only be submissive toward their inner voice, whichwill tell them what is the right thing to do; that they should only fearthis inner-voice, sometimes called conscience, as it will be their solepunisher if they wander from their own values; and that they can achieveparadise everyday of every year if they maintain respect for the insightsthey have attained. And these are the ones that ultimately reach the statewhere they can connect with others, as they have discovered their own sourceof serenity, and can now care for others without making their ultimatewell-being depend on these others. They can practice interconnection becausethey have achieved inner-connection.So, yes: one can become untouched by detaching oneself from everything thatcan be taken away; positions, possessions, and even oneĘs own life. And yes, even parents with strong emotional ties to their children can reach thisstate, but it may take longer, and it may require more effort. And who says anyway that nirvana has to be a constant place to reside? Islife not in and of itself a chain of changes, and thus, a guarantee for upsand downs? And is paradise, or nirvana if you will, then, not an impermanenthaven? Now, for the ones who wonder what the above elucidation about beinguntouched and developing oneĘs own perceptions has to do with business: tryto achieve anything while being insecure, unfocused, disconnected fromcolleagues, and inwardly unbalanced. Success, dear one, starts with knowingwhat you want, and can only be reached when you go for what you want. Andgoing for what you want often requires bundled efforts: team spirit. Andteam spirit requires a spiritual workplace. And a spiritual workplacerequires trust ū and inter-connectedness. Now, if success is what you want:your paradise; your nirvana; and you know that it starts with knowing whatyou want, you may realize by now that knowing what you want requires nothingmore than inner-connection, which isąright: turning inside to obtaininsight.Need I say more?Joan Marques, Burbank, April 30, 2004---------------------------------------------------About the Author:Joan Marques emigrated from Suriname, South America, to California, U.S., in1998.
